Sorry ’bout the lack of updates, I’ve been feeling blah.

Tonight the OSU women play in what may as well be the PAC-10 championship match versus Stanford. It’s important enough that FSN AND FSC will be airing it! It’s in Stanford though, so don’t drive down to Corvallis. The OSU women have been having an unexpectedly good year and are 7-0. I’m sad that I haven’t been to a game down there yet.

MLS playoffs are here and while not every game is televised, the matched I have seen have been fantastic. Last year, every one I saw was 0-0 through extra time and had to be decided on penalties, including the final. This year it’s been end-to-end with red cards, last minute goals and come-from-behind victories.

Games italicized are not live, but first airing of an earlier match.

Friday
5:00 pm – NCAA Men’s Soccer, Alabama-Birmingham at Memphis. FSC.
7:00 – MLS Playoffs, Western Conference Semifinal, Leg 2: FC Dallas at Real Salt Lake. FSC.

After last week’s superb season finale for the Timbers at PGE, this week is kind of a letdown. Since construction is starting at the stadium the last games of the season are away and playoffs are still a ways off. On the TV side of things, there is no champions league for either Europe or North/Central America, the international break cuts out midweek league action and college football bumps nearly everything that comes on during reasonable hours.

There is a bit going on Saturday though. The day is nearly filled out on TV, but the best entertainment is going to be up at the University of Portland campus where the Nike Invitational is being held on Friday and Sunday. Back to back games both days! If you’ve never seen a game at that beautiful stadium you’re really missing out, and at the rate this summer is going it’ll probably start snowing soon, so get out there while it’s nice!

It occurred to me last week that there are more colleges and universities in the Portland area than just PSU/UP. I’ve included in the past OSU games as well, since they’ve produced so many good places over the past few years and because I grew up down there and enjoy catching a game in Corvallis. This week I’ve added some dates for other local schools. I’m not an expert on the college game by any means, so if some of these schools are totally irrelevant and/or play really far down in the NCAA divisions, let me know.

No Champions League this week for either continent, but there’s a Euro 2012 qualifier at midweek, plenty of local college soccer – including an invitational tournament at the University of Portland’s campus – and the last home game for the Timbers.

Construction on PGE Park starts after the game on Thursday (well, not literally, I don’t think), and home playoff matches will be held elsewhere. This is your last chance to see PGE Park before it’s remodeled and your last chance to see the USL Timbers play at their home ground of the last nine years. Mixed feelings for sure! It’s no good playing on a baseball field, and the new renovations look fantastic, but there are a lot of memories for me on that oddly shaped field with the dirt patch and extra-green turf covering the bases. The lights only illuminate half the field, you can’t hear the PA or see the video board and the dugout keeps the field so far away I can’t even tell if the ball has gone in the goal at the other end, let alone who scored it. But I was drawn in from the first “YOU SUCK ASSHOLE!” I heard in 2006. By the time the club asked us to please cut that one out, I was in love enough with the Timbers to dutifully obey. Over the years I’ve been assaulted by smoke bombs and flying bodies after goals. I’ve punch the Sunshine flag like a kid playing parachute in gym class. I’ve been sprayed with beer and knocked my own beer into my scarf after being struck with a beachball pregame. I was there for the Flare Bears, “real fans hate Levesque”, “Keller, Do the Cobain”, and that inflatable orca that used to get tossed around before matches against the Flounders. The last two cup matches against Seattle I got to the gates two hours beforehand, even though I had a ticket, and there was already a huge line. Once, I ended up twenty minutes late to a game and even in that short amount of time I was so infuriated with the refs that I ran over to the top of the tunnel at halftime just to scream mean things at them. I’ve been at games where there were only 3,000 people and it was raining and we lost. I’ve been to games where we managed over 14,000 on a weeknight and we won on a spectacular volley near the end of the game. Of course most of these things can and will be repeated (well, hopefully not the 3,000 at a loss in the rain.) in the new stadium. We’re not losing the team and we’re not even losing the stadium – it’s just going to look incredibly different. And the season starts in March!

Anyway, sorry for the sentimentality. Point is, BE THERE THURSDAY!

Another busy week. Love this time of year! On top of UEFA and CONCACAF Champions League and normal league games in MLS/Mexcio/England, college soccer has begun its preseason, which means there are live games to be had in the Willamette Valley! Oregon State University and University of Portland have good men’s teams – contributing greatly to the Timbers U23 season – and both of those plus Portland State University have women’s programs. OSU over the past several years has produced players from Bryan Jordan of the LA Galaxy (formerly the Timbers), Danny Mwanga who is lighting up MLS, and Robbie Findley, who you may remember from the World Cup. While the University of Portland may be more well known for its outstanding women’s team, the men are pretty good as well and not something to miss.

The Timbers have two home games as they near the end of the regular season. These are you last few opportunities to catch a Timbers match live at PGE Park before they head to MLS. Playoffs will not be held at the stadium, as construction for 2011 will have begun. Look for games to be held at Merlo or in Hillsboro.

Whew, this week required a lot of typing. It’s Champions League time, which means half of Europe’s clubs, some of them rather obscure, are still in the competition. This means that because there are too many games to be shown live, there are a lot of replays. I’ve decided to include the first delayed showing only because they weren’t shown live originally. This is a good chance to see some Americans who play for clubs you likely don’t get to watch, ie Sacha Kljestan at Anderlecht.

I noticed last Saturday that a few games scheduled on Telemundo and Univision weren’t actually on. There appears to be something wrong with my online tv guide, so take Saturday with a grain of salt. Sunday appears to be accurate.

Anyway, this week keep an eye out for Americans abroad. As mentioned, Kljestan at Anderlecht, Spector with West Ham vs Stuart Holden with Bolton, Tim Howard with Everton and of course Dempsey with Fulham on Sunday. Wednesday is a busy day too, with UEFA Champions League in the morning and CONCACAF Champs League in the evening. I’ll be cheering on all the yank teams, because I’d like to see us finally taking this tournament seriously.

Exciting times! First the USA play their first match post-World Cup when they face Brazil at the new Meadowlands stadium. Not a lot of new faces for the US, but it’ll be good to see them again anyway. The Timbers finally make an appearance at PGE Park Wednesday after a long road trip. And finally, Saturday the English Premier League kicks off, meaning there are things to watch all weekend long! Just look at Saturday. Are you really going to get anything done? I’m certainly not.

We’re almost there, people. The European leagues will be starting up within a month, these ridiculous (and admittedly, at least mildly entertaining) club friendlies between preseason English sides and midseason MLS teams will finally be over. Domestically, playoffs will heat up, team USA will play a friendly against Brazil, and best of all, speculation on next year’s MLS Timbers roster will be rife.

In the meantime, we have Concacaf Champions League, the MLS Allstar game (vs this little club called Manchester United) and some regular season MLS. CCL to me is exciting, but I end up disappointed every year that MLS team inexplicably don’t take it seriously. C’mon, don’t you want to be one of the first teams to win in Mexico? Where’s your pride? Fortunately, I guess, a lot of these games will be televised. And in some extraordinary rare praise for the bastards up north, Seattle have supposedly sold over 16,000 tickets for their CCL clash with Metapan on Wednesday. Good for them. Let’s hope that sets a precedent for other clubs to follow.

And while CCL games are the highlight this week, I feel I should mention that at the Allstar game, a coin will be flipped to determine which expansion side, Portland or Vancouver, will get first pick at which draft. Then fun times begin!

Once again, there’s a big lull at the beginning of the week. Life is hard. But the good news is that the Mexican league is getting started, the European leagues are playing their final exhibition tournaments before their seasons kick off, and the Women’s U20 World Cup is still on. And Sunday is a TV football bonanza where one can spend the entire day vegged on the couch watching constant soccer. It kicks off at 7am with a Women’s U20 world cup quarterfinal, followed immediately by a Mexican league game, which starts just a half hour ahead of another Women’s U20 quarterfinal. Then there’s the NY football challenge final (either Sporting, Tottenham, Manchester City or New York Red Bulls), an exhibition between Manchester United and Kansas City, and finally, an MLS league match with Colorado at Seattle.
